A short walk from the Pacific Ocean In Encinitas, California is my studio and home. Here I engage in an unusual combination — traditional oil painting blended with the patination of copper. Sometimes the course is clear, sometimes it’s fraught with adventure. The oxidation of copper part makes it a spirited co-creation with the forces of nature.

The sea has always been big for me. As a little boy I once danced along beside my father as he carried, huffing and puffing, a large rock out of the Long Island surf at my insistence because it had a limpet attached to it… in my teens I bow-watched through fog as mate on a fishing boat out of Hoboken, New Jersey… more recently I’ve migrated from one coast to another across the US. Today I’m at the edge of the Pacific. Most fulfilled gazing out at the inscrutable sea, visiting the nearby tide pools, and painting.

I’m grateful to be able to say that after a number of years banging away at life and art, my artworks are in collections all over the world. My name is Richard Hawk. I’ve worked joyfully in a variety of media but am best known for my work in oil on copper.

All this is nothing to me without the joy of sharing that art can bring. The giclée limited edition artworks you see here are a culmination of the work in my chosen medium. I create each one just for you upon order.

Nature is exuberant and unpredictable in her expression of textures, colors and patterns in the oxidation on copper. The effects are fascinating, beautiful, and stirring to the imagination. Add to this nature-inspired design the bold knifing of paint across a shining surface, bravura brushwork in beloved colors— and what emerges is deeply satisfying and strongly emotive for me. I hope you are moved as well.

More art and more about my eccentric challenges and joys can be found on the Richard Hawk Studio website.
