About ‘Onsen’
Onsen are hot springs in Japan. They were the inspiration for this piece Onsen. I would say more specifically that the peculiarly Asian idiom for representing water is what is really behind the work. This undulating, curvaceous quality which may seen in traditional Japanese ukiyo-e prints and in Chinese semi-e painting, lovely. It so catches the essence of water in a conceptual way, and this is of great interest to me. As a student of Shin Buddhism and of Eastern art I love all the connotations of history and uniquely Asian expressions. This piece began as one of ‘four faces of water’ produced some years ago. The limited edition version of it here is I think actually an improvement on the statement of the original oil on copper work.
