About ‘Rolling Sea III’
There is a place called Spouting Horn near Poipu, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. It is a natural blowhole which can launch water 60 feet into the air. Volcanic rocky outcroppings on the island shore are a rough and craggy counterpoint to the fluid riot of the sea. I went to see the famous plume of water shoot into the sky, but the black and sun-glinting rocks against the turquoise and gray-white spittle of the sea captured my attention even more. Such beautiful sweeping cascades of the sea against the unrelenting solidity of the rocks. The very vertical format for this art work is inspired by the shape of ‘pillar prints’ in the tradition of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock art. The shape is dramatic and aspirational so I use it frequently.
