About ‘Shorelines’
I am often asked what my paintings ‘mean’. Especially the figurative pieces. Always feel overwhelmed at that. There are so many layers and levels, hints and possible symbolisms. Myriad possible interpretations, and some that are buried in the paint and revealed by an observer, not the artist. The reason that artworks please and inspire us is exactly because codifying them is not simple. I saw a person in water. A foot partially submerged. A shoulder turned just so. Then something happened and I started the painting. My thoughts and sensibilities went to the delicate nature of the human race against the enormity of time. The delicate nature of the earth that we are so fiercely inhabiting and consuming. Will science and the digital revolution save us, destroy us? Yes. Patina and paint make their points. Beauty, set us free.
