About ‘Spindrift’
Spindrift is named for the sea foam that is driven off the tops of waves when the wind is high. When the waves come up and crest just so, the foam drives sometimes in a straight line, sometimes bursts into a sort of spirited cloud. A sight so pleasing to the senses. An added attraction to the already heart-throbbing beauty of the waves. The secret face in the painting - look if you haven’t already seen it - a bit of our own self as it were, hidden among the waves. My hope here was to ride a fine line between abstraction and representation so that the sea and spindrift are seen first, the face a secondary burst of surprise. The face is modeled after that in another painting of mine, an oil on copper piece named Will.
