About ‘Trade Winds’
Trade Winds was inspired by a previous large triptych (three panel painting), a commission for a collector. At the start, asked if she would favor mainly the excitement of a stormy sea or the calm of a placid sea…? She said, ‘clouds’. An unexpected answer. And a great one. Opportunity to create an ocean scene in which sky and clouds play a major role. This piece, Trade Winds, capitalizes on that painting experience. Remarkable how copper can express the warm colors which occur in clouds. For the ocean and the craggy shore in the foreground ocean references from my travels were used. Most of the scene though came out of imagination. As did the minuscule lighthouse far in the distance. The line-work calligraphy? A mystic language which for me represents connection between the physical world and the divine.
